PRE-MEDIATION

For families looking to engage in mediation to achieve resolution of the outstanding issue, the Initial Consultation or Pre-Mediation, is an opportunity to learn if mediation is appropriate in their situation, to understand how mediation works to achieve a win-win outcome, and to meet the Family Mediator.

At the Pre-Mediation, you will discuss

  • your family history and background issues
  • which items have been successfully dealt with
  • which items remain outstanding
  • your particular needs, such as Interim Planning or a Parenting Plan

Although it is not necessary for you to bring any financial information to the Pre-Mediation, if you and your spouse are ready to proceed immediately with mediation and a resolution of the outstanding issues, we suggest that you come prepared with as much financial disclosure as possible.

Financial Disclosure includes, but is not limited to:

  • 3 years of Tax Returns for both spouses
  • 3 years of Notices of Assessment for both spouses
  • A recent payroll stub or statement
  • Information about self-employment and businesses that you own
  • Financial details about your home and other properties
  • Financial details about your vehicles, trailers, boats and similar
  • Financial details about other property of significant value such as art, jewelry, and similar
  • Most recent statements from all banking institutions for all joint and sole accounts
  • Most recent statements from all jointly held and solely held credit cards
  • Most recent statements from RRSP, mutual funds, private pensions, and similar
  • Most recent statements from cash value Life Insurance policies
  • Most recent statements from mortgages, lines of credit and other loans and debts
  • Any other financial information which either spouse believes to be relevant

We recognize that you will work very closely with the Family Mediator, and it is important that both parties feel comfortable with the Family Mediator.

The Family Mediator at the Burnaby Deer Lake Law Group offers a 30-minute "Pre-Mediation" meeting free of charge to interested parties, however, we reserve the right to charge for any time beyond the first 30 minutes.

Family Mediation is billed at $250.00 per hour.  Typically, a family will require 4 to 8 hours with the Family Mediator depending on the complexity of the issues and the degree of conflict between the parties.
